As the summer begins to ebb away and the orange hues and deep red shades of autumn fill our vistas, we inevitably start thinking about the colder season that will soon be upon us. Winter often makes us shiver not because of the freezing temperatures but because of the thought of potential problems that it can cause our humble abodes to suffer from. By acting early and assessing all areas of our homes, we can negate the costly issues that winter can bring. Take a look at these tips to ensure that your home is winter ready.


While the weather is still reasonably good, it’s wise to whip out the ladder and ask a friend to keep hold of the lower rungs as you scale the heady heights up to your roof. It’s time to clear the leaves and mulch from your gutter to prevent any damp from seeping in between the brickwork of your home. Check the tiles or slate. If your heating is oil fired, ensure that you source a supply of domestic heating oil and arrange a delivery with plenty of time to spare before the cold snap kicks in. You don’t want to be lulled into a false sense of security with well-maintained pipework if you don’t have enough fuel to keep you warm.

While the draft could be a welcome blast of cool air in the warmer months, in the winter this draft could quickly become an annoyance. If your loft or walls aren’t adequately insulated, it pays to get some cavity wall foam insulation. This can save you hundreds of pounds every year and will pay for itself within five years. You won’t be forced to spend those snowy winter days huddled in your home dressed in three pairs of socks and multiple layers of clothes if you take some time now to check the vulnerable areas of your home.
